'The Beloved' (El ser querido)
'The Beloved' (El ser querido), the
new Movistar Plus+ original film by
Rodrigo Sorogoyen, has been selected to compete in the
Official Competition at the Cannes Film Festival, where it will have its world premiere.
The film, written by
Isabel Peña and Sorogoyen himself and starring
Javier Bardem and
Victoria Luengo, will compete for the Palme d’Or at the upcoming edition of the festival.
In the words of Rodrigo Sorogoyen: "Taking part in the 79th edition of the Cannes Film Festival feels like closing a circle. In 2022, Isabel Peña and I were there with 'As Bestas' (we have wonderful memories of those days), and we wanted to propose to the actor we admired most at the time—and admire even more now—that he join our next project. That was Javier Bardem. We explained that we only had a few lines written, a theme that interested us, and a specific universe. But above all, that we also had Victoria Luengo, the other actress for whom we wrote ‘The Beloved’ (El ser querido). Javier welcomed us at the Hotel Martínez, and that’s where the journey that has brought us here began. We can only say that we are just as grateful as we are excited to close the circle four years later in the same place where it all started. We will enjoy every minute the festival gives us, because we understand that this is our duty!”.
Throughout his career, Rodrigo Sorogoyen has directed award-winning and critically acclaimed films such as 'As Bestas', which had its world premiere in the Cannes Première section before becoming one of the most awarded films, winning prizes such as the César for Best Foreign Film and nine Goya Awards, including Best Film, Director and Original Screenplay.
He recently premiered the series ‘The New Years’ (Los años nuevos) in the Official Selection, out of competition, at the Venice International Film Festival, as well as the nationally and internationally acclaimed ‘Antidisturbios’, both Movistar Plus+ original series.

'Bitter Christmas' (Amarga Navidad)

With 'Bitter Christmas' ('Amarga Navidad'), the new film by Pedro Almodóvar, the platform continues contributing to the creation of a shared cultural legacy, following the path set by its previous project, 'The Room Next Door', both with significant participation from Movistar Plus+.
Produced by El Deseo, the film was released in theaters in Spain on March 20 by Warner Bros. Pictures Spain. 'Bitter Christmas' features the participation of RTVE and significant participation from Movistar Plus+.
Starring Bárbara Lennie, Leonardo Sbaraglia, Aitana Sánchez-Gijón, Victoria Luengo, Patrick Criado, Milena Smit, and Quim Gutiérrez, with special appearances by Rossy de Palma, Carmen Machi, and Gloria Muñoz.
SYNOPSIS
'Bitter Christmas' alternates between two storylines. The first follows Elsa (Bárbara Lennie), an advertising director, in 2004 during the long Constitution Day holiday in December. The second takes place in 2025 and follows Raúl (Leonardo Sbaraglia), a screenwriter and director working on a script that we soon discover is the story of Elsa, her boyfriend Bonifacio (Patrick Criado), and her friends Patricia (Victoria Luengo) and Natalia (Milena Smit).
Blending fiction and reality, Elsa is in some way Raúl’s alter ego, as he turns to autofiction to overcome a prolonged creative drought. He looks inward, but cannot help also looking at the people who make up his closest circle—his partner (Quim Gutiérrez) and his assistant (Aitana Sánchez-Gijón).
The film explores the close relationship between reality and fiction, inspiration and life, raising questions about the limits of autofiction.
