Madrid, 9 May 2024
This week, shooting began on ‘Los Tigres’, the new film by Alberto Rodríguez, an atmospheric character-driven thriller written by the director himself with Rafael Cobos. This film, starring Antonio de la Torre and Bárbara Lennie, is an original production of Movistar Plus+, in co-production with Kowalski Films, Feelgood Media, Mazagón Films AIE and the French company Le Pacte.
Filming began on 6 May and will take place over nine weeks in natural settings in the province of Huelva, Algeciras and on the sets of the Ciudad de la Luz (Alicante). It combines the wild nature of the Atlantic Ocean in southern Spain, close to one of the largest nature reserves in Europe, the Doñana Park, and the unknown world of industrial diving.
Matalascañas and its beaches, Punta Umbría, Mazagón, the Huelva estuary, El Rompido, Saltés Island, Palos de la Frontera, the Aracena reservoir, an oil tanker, a tugboat and its petrochemical refinery, as well as the city of Huelva and its port, will be the backdrops for filming the land scenes and the complex aquatic and underwater scenes. Natural settings that will serve to reflect the contrast between the vastness of nature and an industrial universe, as well as to tell the story of the work and life of these professionals, an interesting mixture of divers, astronauts and plumbers, who carry out their work in the most grandiose of universes, the fascinating ocean.
'Los Tigres' is the new work of Alberto Rodríguez, one of the most renowned directors of his generation. His films, such as the multi-award winning ‘Marshland’, winner of 10 Goya awards and the Silver Shell at the San Sebastian Film Festival for best actor, combine powerful visual universes. Rodríguez's ability to create captivating stories has earned him wide recognition, both from the public and from national and international critics, and he has been nominated for the Goya for best director a total of five times. Alberto Rodríguez has also won two other Goya awards for Best Screenplay and Best Adapted Screenplay. His most recent film, ‘Prison 77’, a Movistar Plus+ original, received five Goya awards and 16 nominations in 2023. In 2018 he directed his first series, ‘The Plague’, a Movistar Plus+ original fiction production, which was the first series to participate in the San Sebastian Film Festival.
Rafael Cobos, who co-signed with Rodríguez the script of ‘Los Tigres’, is one of the most prestigious screenwriters in our country, winner of two Goya awards, both together with Alberto Rodríguez, for best screenplay for ‘Marshland’ and best adapted screenplay for ‘Smoke & Mirrors’. Cobos has also been nominated for five Feroz Awards for his work in both film and television, where he has premiered series such as ‘The Plague’ and ‘Off World’. With the series ‘The Left-Handed Son’, his first project as creator, scriptwriter and director, he won the award for Best Short Form Series at CANNESERIES.
Antonio de la Torre (twice winner of the Goya award for best actor for ‘The Realm’ and ‘DarkBlueAlmostBlack’, and up to 14 times nominated for his eclectic acting work) and Bárbara Lennie (Goya for best actress for ‘Magical Girl’). The cast is completed by Joaquín Núñez (Goya for Best New Actor for ‘Unit 7’), José Miguel Manzano Bazalo ‘Skone’ and Silvia Acosta (‘Fueron los días’, ‘Lava’, ‘Mamacruz’).
In the words of Alberto Rodríguez: "’Los Tigres' is a film that talks about the end of the capacities of an almost amphibious man, someone who is coming to understand that his time is over and that he is neither special nor different, but just one more. Someone who suddenly has to transform himself in order to understand others and to be able to survive in the world around him that he doesn't understand, out of the water. In the end, the characters take a journey to a place as hidden and unfathomable as the seabed. A journey to someone as close and unknown as your own sister and her past".
On the technical side, Rodríguez is once again surrounded by his usual team, professionals with a brilliant film career and numerous awards: the names of Pau Esteve (Goya for best cinematography for ‘Cannibal’, ‘The Plague’), Pepe Domínguez del Olmo (Goya for best art direction for ‘Prison 77’, ‘The Plague’), the costume designer Fernando García (winner of two Goyas for ‘Prison 77’ and for ‘Marshland’), José M. G. Moyano (Goya for best editing for ‘Marshland’ and ‘Prison 77’), Yolanda Piña (Goya for best make-up for ‘Prison 77’), Daniel de Zayas (Goya nominee for best sound for ‘Prison 77’ and ‘Marshland’ and winner of the same award for ‘Before the Fall’) and Julio de la Rosa (Goya nominee for best original music for ‘Prison 77’ and Goya winner for ‘Marshland’) as composer of the original soundtrack.
