Actress/Producer Glenn Close will join the cast of the film ‘La bola negra', an original film by Movistar Plus+ and Suma Content Films in co-production with El Deseo and Le Pacte, written, directed and produced by Spanish filmmakers Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi. The film takes its title from an unfinished work by Federico García Lorca.
Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi, creators of the series ‘Veneno’ and ‘La Mesías’ added, "We are really happy to confirm Glenn Close as part of La bola negra’s cast. It will be an honour to work with such a legend, an actress we had always admired. She read the project and fell in love with it. We are in love with her".
The winner of the Evening Standard Theatre Award for Best Musical Performance for her role as Norma Desmond in the London production of Sunset Boulevard, Close has also won three Emmy Awards, three Golden Globe Awards, three Tony Awards and eight Oscar® nominations. Close is currently starring in the independent film 'The Summer Book' and will star this Fall in the Ryan Murphy series 'All’s Fair' followed by Rian Johnson’s 'Wake Up Dead Man, A Knives Out Mystery'.
Alongside her illustrious film credits, her television work includes the film 'Serving in Silence' and the series 'Damages'.
Close made her Broadway debut in 1974 with the play 'Love for Love'. Her first Tony Award nomination came for ‘Barnum’ and she later won two awards for her performances in ‘The Real Thing’ and ‘Death and the Maiden’. For her portrayal of Norma Desmond in Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical ‘Sunset Boulevard’, she won her third Tony Award in 1995. In 2016, she reprised the role of the diva in London's West End in a highly acclaimed production by the English National Opera, for which she was nominated for an Olivier Award. She then returned to Broadway for the musical’s revival.
Spanish filmmakers, Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi are the authors of ‘Veneno’ and ‘La Mesías’.
Winner of a GLAAD award, among many other accolades, ‘Veneno’ became a phenomenon in the United States after its premiere on HBO Max. In 2021, it was considered one of the best series of the year by media outlets such as Variety, The New Yorker, Vulture and The New York Times.
‘La Mesías’ premiered at the San Sebastián Film Festival and was the first Spanish series to be included in the Sundance Film Festival program. It won the most important Spanish audiovisual awards (six Feroz, three Forqué, one Ondas, among others) and two awards at the prestigious European festival Series Mania. In France, it premiered on ARTE, receiving enthusiastic reviews.
Guitarricadelafuente (making his acting debut), Miguel Bernardeau (‘Élite’), Carlos González (‘Veneno’), Lola Dueñas (‘La Mesías’) and Penélope Cruz (Oscar® winner) head the cast of ‘La bola negra’, which began filming in August. They are also part of the film’s cast: Lorenzo Zurzolo (‘Baby’), Julio Torres (‘Fantasmas’), Natalia de Molina (‘Superestar’), Antonio de la Torre (‘The Realm’) and Albert Pla (‘La Mesías’), as well as new talents discovered by the directors, such as Milo Quifes.
‘La bola negra’ tells the interconnected lives of three men in three different eras. Three lives intimately linked by sexuality and desire, pain and inheritance; and one of Federico García Lorca's last, unfinished works.
‘La bola negra’ will be released in Spanish cinemas by the distributor Elastica. Goodfellas will handle international sales.
