Synopsis 'The Anatomy of a Moment'
Based on the 23-F coup d'état that took place in Spain on February 23, 1981, ‘The Anatomy of a Moment’ dissects one of the crucial moments in recent Spanish history: the Transition. When Civil Guard Lieutenant Colonel Antonio Tejero entered the Congress building with a pistol in his hand, only three men remained seated while the rest ducked for cover: Adolfo Suárez, Santiago Carrillo and Gutiérrez Mellado.
Episode 1 - Synopsis
Adolfo Suárez assumes the presidency with the support of King Juan Carlos and leads the democratic transition, facing mistrust and obstacles from Francoism. His greatest challenge is to dismantle the regime without disruption and legalise the Communist Party, which puts his legitimacy at stake and generates political and military tensions.
Episode 2 - Synopsis
Santiago Carrillo, exiled after Franco's death, pushes to return and legalise the Communist Party. He enters Spain clandestinely and negotiates with Suárez, achieving the legalisation of the PCE at the cost of being branded a traitor by his own people and facing the electoral disappointment that marks his decline.
Episode 3 - Synopsis
General Gutiérrez Mellado supports Suárez in consolidating democracy and bringing the army under civilian control. He suffers military hostility and the drama of ETA violence, remaining loyal to Suárez until his resignation, amid growing tensions and clashes, especially with Milans del Bosch.
Episode 4 - Synopsis
The coup of 23 February is reconstructed through the trial of Armada, Milans del Bosch and Tejero. The episode shows the motivations and actions of the coup leaders and the firmness of Suárez, Carrillo and Gutiérrez Mellado during the assault on Congress. Without the support of the King, the coup fails and those primarily responsible are convicted.
